I thought it would be interesting to see the Geographic data from Google Insight with regards to some of the top social networks around the world. Below you will find the data returned for each site, and the resulting country that has the highest percentage of interest for the given sites URL.

Here is a quick excerpt from Google Insight explaining how this data is formulated in the first place:

If a region doesn’t appear highlighted on the map for a particular search term, does it mean there’s no interest?

No. Keep in mind that all results from Insights are normalized. So just because a particular region doesn’t appear on the top Regional interest list or isn’t highlighted on the geographic heat map, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the search term isn’t popular at all - it just means that the term is more popular in other regions.

Note that you cannot simply ping a domain name and get the returned values so the data was based off of users typing in “domain name.com” as the search query.

The YouTube demographics threw me for a bit of a loop, as I expected the American market to be off the charts with this one. Excellent article and data! Thanks!

I’m surprised Facebook was so low in Canada, considering how everyone in Toronto seems to be on it!…its popularity may be lower in other regions of the country, so it would average out this way.

It might be better for Google to collect data from different regions of larger countries for better accuracy (nitpick, nitpick, nitpick….)

@ChristieLea Unless I’m reading it wrong, Canada was the lead country for Facebook. It may not have gone dark blue because it’s relative to the others, who also search it alot? But yeah, a lot of the data we see show’s the popularity of Facebook in Canada.

This is very interesting data. I’m a little surprised Canada wasn’t a deeper blue as noted above, but perhaps this is relative. And maybe they don’t so much search for Facebook via Google but get invited… anyway, this is good stuff.

Friendster is really popular in the Philippines, and thats reflected in the map for the website.

Seriously, the younger demographic is usually using Friendster in the Internet cafes that I use when I’m in the county. Constantly.

I’m from there, but I live in the UK. I head over there every year or so to visit my folks..
