2011 Social Network Analysis Report – Geographic – Demographic and Traffic Data Revealed

Posted by | No Tags | Social Media Stats

2010 was a rocky year in the social network space and many sites closed their doors including Propeller.com and Team Sugar, to name a few. Quite a few others continued their decline into yesterday’s news as we see more social network users consolidating their social profiles. Undoubtedly, Facebook’s continued growth worldwide has led to this as it becomes the de facto source for social networking. We added coverage of the following international social networks this year:
  • Douban.com
  • Hyves.nl
  • Imvu.com
  • Kaixin001.com
  • Mixi.jp
  • NK.pl
  • Odnoklassniki.ru
  • QQ.com
  • Renren.com
  • Sonico.com
  • Tagged.com
  • Taringa.net
  • Tumblr.com
  • Vkontakte.ru
  • Wer-kennt-wen.de
  • Weibo.com

2011 Social Network Analysis Methodology:

This year we will be reporting data a little differently, as last year we noticed a trend, specifically Google Insights for search seeing a large drop in ‘sitename.com’ domain search traffic. No real clues ever surfaced to why this occurred, therefore we are looking at searches for strictly ‘name’ to correlate demographic and geographic data. This should give us a larger sampling of data, as users are much more likely to search for a site’s name then ‘name.com.’ However, with that said, certain networks such as Tribe.net still needed to utilize the ‘name.com’ variation, since people looking for ‘tribe’ could be looking for a myriad of things, thus corrupting the data set. All data continues to come from Google because they have one of the largest data sets on the web. We continued to use their Google Ad Planner and Google Insight for Search product to pull demographic and geographic data. The Top Cities and Top Region reports show proportionate interest levels to the area based on the given search query. The Demographic and Geographic reports have Y axis numbers that are percentages out of 100, therefore if the score is .52 then its 52% of the population. The Search Traffic reports are based on proportionate search traffic for the given query. Its on a scale of 100. Therefore if a given month shows the chart near 100 then that is the busiest month for query searches ever reported in Google during that given time frame.

Wow, really interesting stuff. I also didn’t know about the Google Insights for Search. Unfortunately, they still don’t have a API for it, but it provides an amazing wealth of knowledge. Great article.

At the time of pulling this data that is what it was. Please read my methodology section for clues into how to best interpret this data. Its proportionate search interest to the area or region. Its not saying that the most users on Twitter are from that area.

If I were interpreting that section for example I would say to myself, Ok, apparently in Venezuala and Brazil they are seriously interested in Twitter.

Now let me go do some digging.

Here is more data from Comscore stating that assumption is pretty accurate.

http://comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2010/8/Indonesia_Brazil_and_Venezuela_Lead_Global_Surge_in_Twitter_Usage

Anytime you try to act on data I encourage users to find other sources to back up situations. Remember this is one comprehensive data set. There are others out there and as the marketer you should be looking to cross check.

I am curious about how cities like Milpitas and Sterling (CA, USA) have shown up on such a diverse amount of networks. Is it because of server traffic, ISP hubs or is it demographics?

I’m from Waterloo, Canada! We have RIM (maker of the Playbook and Blackberry) headquarters and Google and other big name high-tech firms in the area. We also have 2 universities in town University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. We’re known as one of Canada’s high-tech ‘bubbles’ and with students added into that mix, a lot of traffic can be created!

I was so excited to see Waterloo as the top city for Foursquare!

I noticed it as well and it is an interesting data anomaly that is worth investigating further. Your assumptions aligned pretty similarly to what I assumed as well. But it is hard to say for certain since the analysis from that angle is based on proportionate search traffic for the regions of interest.

The article shows that we do not need lengthy articles (in words) always to put our points forward. Really great and insightful. It helps to narrow down the alternatives for social media marketers, depending on the demography/geography/income level of their prospective customers.

Really helpful and great article. It helps the social media marketers to narrow down their alternatives for choosing the available tools given above. We can easily choose the one which suits best to the specifics (like age, income, geography, etc) of our target segments.

If you are cross checking, I will say this, Google updates its data set quite frequently so numbers, at the time of my pulling them, and the time you cross check will never align.

If that isn’t the issue please elaborate.

Is all your data from Google Insights? Does that mean that the demographics/education/salary stats of each platform actually refer to the demographics of the population performing a search for these platforms on Google, not the actual demographics of its users? Please clarify. Thanks!

Anonymous says:

July 18, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Thanks for your question Laura, Id’e recommend reading over the methodology section again. Data is pulled from several sources from Google, not just Insights for search.

“Does that mean that the demographics/education/salary stats of each platform actually refer to the demographics of the population performing a search for these platforms on Google, not the actual demographics of its users?”

Yes. One can infer that if a user searches for these sites then they use it. People use search as a means to get to the websites they use. This is a very common method of using the Internet and is strong enough of a correlation to base the study on.

There is no 100% accurate way to tell the demographics of a websites users. This is currently the best public facing dataset to make estimates on when analyzing and understanding demographics on websites.

I’m confused: How come there are NO United States data points in the Facebook TOP REGION section – and TOP city cites Milpitas (assuming California?) which has a population of 62,000 people?? Please advise. How can this be?

Very interesting statistics. I’ve noticed that the social networking sites that seem to outlast their competitors allow outbound links and the sites that die quickly don’t.  I know most people won’t like the idea that spam opportunities drive the web but I think that that is a factor in how quickly new social media enterprises get adopted. 😉

Social network analysis is based on an assumption of the importance of relationships among interacting units. The social network perspective encompasses theories, models, and applications that are expressed in terms of relational concepts or processes. Along with growing interest and increased use of network analysis has come a consensus about the central principles underlying the network perspective. The field of network analysis is conventionally criticized for being too much methodological and too little theoretical. Critics say that there are few truly network theories of substantive phenomena. This is not a well-considered argument, however, because when examples of network theories are presented, critics say ‘that’s not really a network theory’. This is natural because theories that account for, say, psychological phenomena, tend to have a lot of psychological content. Theories that account for sociological phenomena have sociological independent variables. Only theories that explain network phenomena tend to have a lot of network content.

I tend to use Google Insights for market research. It’s invaluable to know what search terms are used for certain areas of the country. Local search is the future of marketing. Social media, on the other hand, I’m not so certain about.

Quick question about the tumblr.com Top Regions – when it says tumblr.com interest from the Philippines is 100%, does that mean 100% of people in the Philippines have Googled tumblr.com? Surely the US, which accounts for the largest amount of tumblr users, would have a higher ‘interest’?
