We here at Ignite Social Media pride ourselves on being on top of the newest social media toys, partially because it’s what we do, but partially because we can’t help ourselves. I swear, Brian Chappell was born with a mouse fused to his tiny little SEO palm!
Recently we started exploring Twitpic, which is a tool that allows you to upload photos that are then sent out as a tweet with an accompanying link to the photo. You can upload the photos directly on the site or you can send them from your phone to a customized email address, with your message in the subject line. Twitpic tweets the whole thing for you.
The “About” section on Twitpic is pretty understated, but creator Noah Everett says that Twitpic was conceived in a similar way as other popular social media tools: he wanted to do something, built the mechanism for doing it, and realized other people were interested in using his tool for the same reasons. Oversimplified, yes, but his thought process exemplifies what is so brilliant about social media: it allows people to interact in exactly the ways that they want to. Now I can snap an accompanying photo with my sweet new phone when I tweet about an event I’m covering, my rental property, or if I’m Levar Burton and think something at CES is cool looking. A picture is worth 140 characters, afterall.
I asked Noah to cull the top 15 most popular Twitpics based on number of views, and he was kind enough to take the time to send over this list from his site, which is getting a lot of love these days as a means of personalization. People like to know what you’re about, and your clients are people, too.
Check out the top 15 most viewed Twitpics below. In the name of full disclosure, a photo I posted is in the #5 spot. A friend of mine in Brooklyn snapped an iPhone photo of what we suspect is a new piece by street artist Banksy. The rest, as they say, is social media history.
