Pinterest Starts Testing New Ad Unit, Snapchat Gets Creative | Social You Should Know

SYSKblackboard_headerPinterest begins testing new ads, Snapchat implements an interesting marketing tactic and Twitter finds a reason to celebrate, all in this week’s social you should know.

Birthday Celebrations

Two renowned social companies are celebrating some important anniversaries. On Monday, Twitter celebrated 10 years in the social universe and tugged at user’s heart-strings with this touching Thank You note and video (below). Through all the ups and downs of the past 10 years, Twitter still has an average 305M monthly active users, but with other networks on the rise we’ll keep an eye on this old bird. But that’s not the end of Twitter’s celebration, as their live-streaming app, Periscope, celebrated 1 full year this past Saturday. Although live-streaming is still pretty niche, Periscope has found a group of core users. According to Global Web Index, 41% of users are aged 16-24 and 3 in 4 of them are under 35.

Promoted Video Pins for Pinterest

A small group of advertisers have gotten the first look at Promoted Video pins. Video ad units are autoplay that sets in motion when a user stops scrolling over them. Video Length and full roll-out is still being determined. This unit will be a good compliment to Cinematic pins, but since video isn’t as high priority on this channel, compared to Facebook, it will be interesting to see how well these ad-types perform.

Snapchat Stats and Billboards?

Billboards aren’t exactly the first item that comes to mind when one talks about Snapchat. But nonetheless, the overwhelmingly popular app has a few tricks up its sleeve for avid users. In a few select metro cities, Snapchat has taken over 50 static billboards. The billboards don’t have any reference to Snapchat, but instead represent a geofilter for that specific area, and the creative is the work of Snapchat users via the platform’s Community Geofilter. Additionally, our friend Jay Baer over at Convince and Convert released some interesting Snapchat Stats that are worth taking a look at.
