16 May 3 Reasons Why You Should Run Your Photo Contest in the Summer

Posted at 11:00h in Content Creation, Social Media Promotion, Social Media Sweepstakes by Emily Spurlock

Photo contest are a great way to drum up excitement as well as an excellent way to source UGC content for your brands social channels. There are plenty of prompts that can be served to fans to get them reaching for their phones looking for the best photo they have to share. Summer, or even Spring for that matter, are great seasons to run these types of contests. Why you wonder?

Going Outside

Imagine this shot in the winter, not as fun.

Unless you live in an area that is warm all year round, going outside to shoot photos in the colder months takes some motivation. A lot of motivation. When the weather is nice we’re more apt to want to get out there and explore, find different locations to take our photos. Contests can be run in the summer but unless the prompt involves snow, a lot of people are limited to the indoors and lighting isn’t always the best.

Nature

April showers bring May flowers and that provides for colorful backgrounds for photos. Sure, there is a lot that can be done indoors or when the trees have lost their leaves, but let’s be honest, most of us enjoy the bright colors vibrant greens. Inspiration can come easier when nature can provide backdrops to elevate the photo.

Attitude

People are generally happier and more energetic in the warmer seasons making it easier to prompt them to get creative. Personally, I’m more interested in doing things when I don’t have to bundle up like the kid from A Christmas Story. During the fall and winter participation may drop in photo contest because people may feel they don’t have a good location to take photos. Some may have the photography background to create better lighting but if not, you could end up with a lot of dull lit photos.

Now we’re not saying that a photo contest can’t be done in the fall or winter, there are ways to capture great content inside. Spring and summer just allow for a wider variety of content depending on what prompt works for your brand. Interesting in running a photo contest to engage fans or capture new UGC, we’d love to help.
