Finally, Instagram will allow links and @mentions in their stories, while Twitter makes another move to make the platform friendlier, in this week’s Social You Should Know.

Instagram Adds Links, Boomerangs and Tagging to Stories

Instagram has become an increasingly vibrant community over the last two years, but the ability to link from content was a big drawback for marketers. Now, starting with verified users, content posted in Stories can include a link, which will open in a browser within Instagram. Even better, tagging of friends is also possible and the ability to create a Boomerang (a short, looping video) from within Instagram is now included. These changes will really help marketers, particularly as they roll out to all profiles.

Twitter Adds Strong Mute Tools

When Twitter put itself up for sale, many suitors apparently backed out at least in part because of the high volume of trolls, as we told you here in late October. Since the sales collapsed, Twitter has made many changes, including shuttering Vine. Now, Twitter is rolling out an enhanced mute feature, which lets users block certain words, hashtags and usernames. Success cleaning up this platform could make the company saleable again.

Future of Social Media in 2016 Report

A new report from Buffer looks at trends in social media according to a survey of over 1,200 marketers. Major findings include the struggle to make more videos, the fact that 80% of marketers are not using social media for customer support and the continued abandonment of Google+ by marketers. Also of note, despite Facebook’s decline in organic reach, 72% of marketers use Facebook as much or more than they did a year ago. Take a look.

And finally, did you see the 60 Minutes piece on influencer marketing two weeks ago? I took a moment to write a guest post on MediaPost about what the TV news show missed when it comes to effective influencer marketing. Hope you enjoy it.
