26 Social Media Marketing Examples in Detail

Last week, I stumbled across Peter Kim’s blog post titled, ”A List of Social Media Marketing Examples”. Let me just add that this title should be revised to, “A MASSIVE list of Social Media Marketing Examples”, because Peter has collected over 200 companies who are using social media, and provided links to the specific efforts. I truly appreciate his efforts, and have bookmarked it, printed it, and am thinking about tattooing it so that I can always have it on hand for reference.

Since I enjoy reviewing successful and unsuccessful social media marketing campaigns, I thought I’d get back on the blogging bandwagon by taking a look at 26 of these companies and providing my review on what the social media marketing effort is in detail, and how I think these efforts work for the company. (Perhaps when I feel more ambitious I’ll set a goal to go through each of the 200, but I like setting goals that I can reach :-))istock_000006037154small.jpg

Here’s my tentative list:

  1. Animal Planet
  2. Best Western
  3. Clorox
  4. Del Monte
  5. ExxonMobil
  6. Fandango
  7. Graco
  8. HomeGoods
  9. Ikea
  10. Joffrey’s
  11. Kraft
  12. Library of Congress
  13. Miller Brewing Co
  14. National Geographic
  15. OpenTable
  16. Patagonia
  17. Quicken
  18. Rubbermaid
  19. SELF Magazine
  20. Taco Bell
  21. United Kingdom Government
  22. Victoria’s Secret
  23. WhirlPool
  24. Xerox
  25. Yoplait
  26. Zappos

Since this list came from my own alphabetical selection (and personal preferences), I thought I’d start this series off by asking for suggestions and replacements so that I’m covering the companies that you are most curious about. Feel free to look over Peter Kim’s list here, and let me know the companies that you would like to see added to this list (and which company you’d like to replace it with - since I’m only reviewing 26!).

Look forward to hearing your input in the comments below!

I'd like to see Target, Victoria's Secrets and Gap efforts in Social Media Marketing. Wonderful case-studies from IgniteSocialMedia though.

This series of marketing examples inspired me to start one of my own, focused on small business. Thank you, I give Ignite credit in my first blog post on the subject:)

I have a question: Do you contact the companies that you use in case studies like these? If so, how do you go about it...by email? Do you contact people in PR/marketing depts? I am working on a Twitter specific business series and my two attempts at contacting local businesses were ignored, or maybe lost...

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Hi Lisa, great list! Any of your case studies outside of the USA? I'm interested in international examples of social media.

Thanks for a very helpful post. I'm always looking for SM success stories and this is a great compiled list. Looking forward to your reviews on each.

As someone working in the B2B world with manufacturers and professional service and technical service firms. It would be nice to see some of those examples. On second thought, I will review Peter's list and pull off 26 that fit my criteria (if there are that many) and analyze them and let you know about my post. I can link back to yours when done.

Nice article, Dave, and good comments so far. I agree with Andrew that brands like pharma may not be able to interact on social media the same way as other brands, they can still gain from listening to what people are saying.
