Quick Vote: Which Book Cover Would You Choose?

If you're new here, and interested in the latest news and insights on social media marketing, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting Ignite Social Media.
I need your help. My new book, Social Media is a Cocktail Party, is going to production in the next week. I’ve been presented with two designs for the cover. Neither one is 100% yet, as there’s some wording that needs to be tweaked, but overall, they’re pretty close.
Most folks around the office here have chosen their favorite, but we thought we’d get better feedback if we asked all of you what you think. So, without further ado, here are the covers. Take a quick look (click on them if you want to see them bigger), and then tell me: Which one is your favorite?

Got something to say?

Definitely number two. It makes me want to look closer. In fact, I’m dying to know what the quotes inside those little blurbs say.
Also, the title is so true & it’s exactly what I thought when I first joined Twitter - which still makes me feel like I’m mingling in and out of small conversations already in progress whenever I browse in.

I favor the first one…I love clean design.
Plus, I love the title. The second one is a little too busy for my tastes…but I’ll buy your book no matter which one you choose!
I really like the 2nd one, it draws me in and makes me want to grab it. I’ll be standing in line for Lisa to autograph my copy
Both are pretty cool, but I voted for number two. It stands out more to me.

I like #1 better because it’s less cluttered and the graphic is really clever. The drink also looks much more appetizing!
Where is the hot chick in a cocktail dress? While the content of this book will be top-notch, I judge a book by its cover.
Awesome stuff!
Cover 2 makes me think “Jim & Ignite.” It looks more like a book I’d pick up off the shelf. Cover 1 looks a more textbook-ish to me. College made me dislike textbooks, if you can imagine that.
PS- I used to work in a public library, I know my book covers!
Cover 1 is more appealing to me - the hand icon over the martini is intriquing.
Cover 2 is a bit “busy” BUT the back cover, colors, call out bubbles, typography looks more “Ignite branded” - if that’s what your going for.
This is like a focus group, except faster and with more people! Thanks for all the input! ~Jim
Neither. . . You can do much much better. I like the back of the second cover, but honestly, and I say this with much love, but neither is very professional looking. The website has a much better feel. . .
I love how you’ve co-opted the “click” icon into branding the cover of your book in the first one. A well-known online image paired with a traditional martini glass? That’s what makes it work.
The second, well….it immediately called to mind a high school “Drinking Is Bad” poster. Go with the first one!
I also enjoy the clean design of the first choice! The click icon holding the glass is brilliant.
#1 is boring. #2 is much more interesting and looks like something I’d read.

There’s a lot you could do to combat the argument against number 2 being too busy. Lose the red bar across the headline and the whole black box at the bottom. Put a single clean line under the image and reconsider the font in the title.

use of more current typefaces would drastically improve the look & feel of either cover, and why not carry across the ignite colors more strongly? i’d love to take a stab at these myself.
and, lisa is my hero.
