McCormick Brands Make Social Push During Summer

One of McCormick’s brands, Grill Mates, has been using several social media campaigns to kick off this year’s grilling season. One of them took place during Memorial Day weekend, in which Grill Mates took over billboards in Times Square. Fans were encouraged to tweet #grillmates and be entered to have their image plastered on the NASDAQ digital sign for the weekend.

McCormick’s marinating and seasoning brand, Lawry’s, launched the “Digital Dinner Bell.” The Android app, targeted towards mothers, coordinates Facebook, SMS messaging, and phone calls to help organize family meals.

Shaq Uses Social Media to Stay in Spotlight

Despite retirement and Achilles tendon surgery, Shaquille O’Neal is doing his best to remain in the public eye. He’s used Twitter along with the video-sharing service Tout to update fans on his recovery and Facebook to see if  they want to see pictures from his surgery. Shaq was one of the first big personalities on Twitter (pun intended) and I expect him to use his large social media presence (last one, I promise) to help him remain a popular sports icon.

NYC Flexes Its Social Media Muscle for Change

The mayor’s office at New York City launched Change by Us NYC as “a place to share ideas, create projects, discover resources, and make (the) city better.” After creating an account, users can post digital sticky notes with their ideas. Site creator Jake Barton hopes to turn complaints into agents of change. The idea is catching on and similar sites are going to be launching soon in Philadelphia, Seattle and San Jose in the coming months.
