Jimmy Kimmel and his new National Social Media Holiday

For any Jimmy Kimmel fans out there, you may or may not have heard about the newest national holiday that he established last Wednesday on his show.  November 17th is now National Un-Friend day.

Here’s the segment if you missed it:

So, as Jimmy would say, it’s time to cut the fat.  And I’m ready to get lean.  Last night as my day was wrapping up, I posted his suggested comment, “I’m moving this weekend, anyone around to help?” to see for sure how many of my 327 so-called friends would offer up their services, thus determining who my real friends are.

After logging on this morning, I discovered the saddening news that only 3 people offered to help (sigh).

Although, to feel a little less “loser-ish” I am going to alter the rules a bit and include in the count my “friends” that commented and those that called/texted me last night to ask about my exciting news.  So, I guess life is looking up…. I can now say that I have 15 friends.

Now I am faced with a very hard decision.  Can I bring myself to un-friend 312 people on November 17th in celebration of the holiday?  Come on, who am I kidding?  The very thought of it makes me anxious.

While Jimmy raises a good question and made me think about how many of my friends are actually friends, I can tell you neither myself or the rest of the world is anywhere near ready to end their friend addiction on Facebook or on any other social networking sites for that matter.  Remember “Quit Facebook Day” in June?  Only about 34,000 people committed to quitting (which I suspect was probably a lot less on the actual day).  So for now, I think the world is going to continue to love their social channels, including Facebook, and yes, we will be there to help brands participate.

Does anyone disagree?  Are any of you actually thinking about going through with Un-Friending all of your non-friends?
